Use zippered mesh laundry bags for delicate items (bras - hook them first) or to keep small items (baby socks) together. You can get a set from amazon. It allows me to wash one delicate top with regular clothes without having to hand wash 1 item.
Use the proper cycle: Permanent press - for dress shirts, items that will wrinkle and you have to iron. Regular - for normal clothing you can just wash and wear. Whites - obviously for whites.

- Separate colors and whites. However I take it one step further, I separate by weight. So jeans and pants are one load (heavy) and t-shirts and other lightweight clothing are another. Wash your sheets separately. Wash your towels separately.
- Pre-treat!! This is important in getting out stains. I love the stain remover sticks. You rub it on the spot and you can wash it later. Sprays are good too for immediate washings. You’re not supposed to let sprays dry on the clothing - read the label.

- Don’t throw everything in the dryer at once. The weight of the clothes take more or less time to dry. Dry it on the proper cycle as well. Too hot of a temp can ruin clothes. Or don’t dry them at all (bras, bathing suits, athletic wear) anything with elastic/spandex will get ruined from the heat of the dryer.
- Zip-up zippers and buttons on pants/jeans. Keeps them from rubbing against other items. Turn jeans inside out if they are a dark wash. Zip-up jackets, but leave sweaters/cardigans unbuttoned - they stretch and can ruin them.
- More detergent doesn’t mean more clean. Measure the amount with the cup! Also check the water level, the clothes need to move around so don’t over stuff the washer.
- Wash a full load to save electricity and money.
- Buy clothes you can wash and wear. It saves you from having to take them to the dry cleaner, and also the heartbreak of realizing you just accidentally washed (and ruined) your favorite silk sweater!
