Today, when we say someone is hysterical, we mean they are crazy, crazy or out of control.
All of these are simplifications, and may even be pure misogyny. In fact, the concept of hysteria has changed throughout the history of Western Europe: this disease has become the collective name for a wide range of diseases such as epilepsy, infertility, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and menopause (sadly).
